ON THE BEND OF THE ADIGE
STONE BRIDGE
Ponte Pietra or Pons Marmoreus on the Adige river (called Athesis by the Romans) was first constructed by the Romans in Verona in the 1st century BC. It is built of two different materials: the original white stone and then later bricks that replaced the damage suffered by floods and war. It retains the characteristic “donkey-back” shape of Roman bridges. The last arch on the right is a medieval reconstruction commissioned in 1298 by Alberto I della Scala. During the rebuild of the bridge they also added a THREATENING DEFENSIVE TOWER facing the river, by a stone arch surmounted by the emblem of the Scaligeri. It remains one of the most romantic places in the entire city. As happened with all the bridges in Verona, it was demolished by the Germans fleeing during the Second World War and then rebuilt using only the original materials recovered from the river bed.
